Paca Talk is...

Paca Talk is a podcast by alpaca people, for alpaca people.

We are Charles and Maren Anderson of Evergreen Terrace Farms, and it feels natural for us to have an alpaca podcast. We like to talk about alpacas, and we like to talk to people who like to talk about alpacas.

We'd like to talk to you! Contact us with questions, show ideas, or comments.

While Katy is proud to call herself a farmer, she describes the alpaca industry as something that is, “on the fringe of the ag world.”

Matthew Modine

Peri Gilpin, best known as Roz on Frazier, and Third Rock from the Sun star French Stewart will join Matthew Modine in Matthew Modine Saves the Alpacas, at the Geffen Playhouse, September 8-October 18, with an opening set for September 16. John Rando will direct.

Modine will play a fictionalized version of himself in this play by Blair Singer. The comedy tells the plight of a celebrity desperately in need of getting back in the limelight. The cast will also include Reggie De Leon, Mark Damon Espinoza, and Mark Fite. The creative team will include Beowulf Boritt (set), Robert Blackman (costumes), Jeff Croiter (lighting), and Jon Gottlieb (sound).

Last Chance for ARI Discount

This is a reminder that in response to member requests to allow a discount period on old registrations, the Board of Directors approved a 90 day discount which ends at the end of August. Not only is this discount being applied to registrations, but it is also being applied to transfers.

During this period, which is running from June 1st to August 31st, registrations and transfers are priced accordingly:

REGISTRATIONS
Online Office
$50.00 $55.00
TRANSFERS
Online Office
$30.00 $35.00

As always, the gelding prices have remained at their current low rates. As we begin collection of data for the EPD program, even gelding data will be important, so please consider registering these alpacas now. The prices are:

GELDING REGISTRATIONS
Online Office
$25.00 $30.00
GELDING TRANSFERS
Online Office
$15.00 $20.00

We hope that you will take advantage of this discount period to register any older alpacas that you have been unable to register in the past and to complete any transfers that you have been holding off on.

Registrations & Transfers must be received in the office by August 31st in order to receive the discount.

ARI’s PCR BVDV Testing

Last month, ARI began offering PCR BVDV testing off of DNA blood cards. This service has been very well received with more than 500 alpacas being tested so far. We wanted to take this opportunity to remind you of this option and to give you some information about our testing.

The cost of this service is $25.00 per test and the really exciting part is that these tests will be completed using the same DNA blood cards that we use for DNA testing. However, it is important that you fill the entire circle on the blood card to ensure there is enough sample to be tested. CLICK HERE to review the Blood Card Instruction Sheet.

When registering a new alpaca, you will be given the option to add a BVDV test to that transaction if you choose to do so.

In addtion, there are two ways to request a test for an alpaca that has already been registered. The first way is to go to ‘View My…Alpacas’ and click on an alpaca. You will now have a new tab that says ‘BVDV View’. In this tab you will be able to request a test on that alpaca and also view any previous test results for that alpaca. The second way is to use the ‘I want to…Request BVDV Tests’ menu to see a list of your alpacas, where you can select multiple alpacas to have tested at once.

Here are some things to remember:

  • Fill out your blood card before drawing the blood and putting it on the card
  • Be sure to write ‘BVDV Test’ on the card or we won’t know that it is a BVDV test. Future card designs will have a check box available
  • You must request the test within 20 days of the day you draw the blood and have the card to us within 10 days after that. This is important for the reliability of the testing
  • Have the blood cards available before requesting online because you will need to enter the bar code number just like you do for a registration
  • Results will be available online for you to download, we will also send you an email and mail you a paper copy
  • Our report lists the results as either ‘Not Detected’ or ‘Detected’
  • If BVDV is present in the sample, you will receive a phone call notifying you and requesting additional testing
  • BVDV testing will follow the same testing schedule as DNA tests, which is about 7-10 days from the time we receive the card
  • Most Importantly: We cannot provide rushed testing and as a result, our testing should NOT be used if you think you have an outbreak. If you have an emergency, please use the other testing vendors that are available

If you have questions, please CLICK HERE and login to submit a supoort issue online or call us at (402)437-8484 and we will be happy to assist you.

New medicine found for treating alpacas with ulcers

In looking at what brought visitors to my site I noticed that lately a lot of them are inquiring about ulcers in alpacas. It was less than 3 years ago that we lost our beloved Hip Hop Babe to perforated ulcers. You can read all about it by Clicking Here

A third study has been conducted by Geoffrey Smith, DVM at North Carolina State University which offers more hope and a much more positive outcome! Pantoprazole has been demonstrated to reduce the acidity of the third compartment when administered either subq or intravenously. The animals used in this study also had a cannula inserted into their third stomach compartment in order to test the pH of the actual stomach contents. When administered either IV or subq, pantoprazole provided a slow, sustained, significant increase in pH, indicating a therapeutic level had been reached! An effective and safe treatment now appears in pantoprazol for the use in both treatment and prophylaxis of camelid ulcers! Thank you Dr. Smith!

Your donated dollars to ARF allow this research project, and many more to continue. Please make your contribution today.

Welcome to Alpacas in the News, the weekly segment of Paca Talk dedicated to bringing you alpaca-related news items from around the world. I’m your host, Maren Bradley Anderson, and this is Alpacas in the News for July 24, 2009.

Happy Birthday, Dr. Tim!

Alpaca Industry News

July 20, 2009

The 2010 AOBA BOD has unanimously decided to constitute the 2010 Nominating and Election Committee early this year in order to create a cost effective election, improve election documentation, explore electronic voting, improve overall processes and to establish the 2010 candidate selection and education process.

Jim Patrick, who as committee chairman ran our very successful 2009 election, has agreed to return and be the temporary chairperson of the committee.  As the committee members are selected and finalized, a recommendation for the 2010 Election Chairperson will be made by the committee.
We are calling for potential committee members (4 will be selected in addition to Jim Patrick).  The ideal committee members should have the following credentials:

  • A minimum of 3 years experience in the operation of an alpaca livestock business
  • >5 years experience in general business
  • Member of at least 1 AOBA affiliate for > 2 years
  • Willingness to NOT be considered in 2010 as a BOD candidate
  • Experience and interest in the marketing of alpaca fiber
  • Experience in showing alpacas
  • A willingness to devote a minimum of 2 hours a week to this committee
  • A spirit of making the impossible the possible!
  • Strong team player!
  • Willingness to serve 2 years if asked (2 members of the 2010 committee will be asked to return in 2011)

Interested parties should contact Jim Patrick only; prior to August 5, 2009.  Please call and /or email Jim at 214-505-0754 or patrickspastures@verizon.net.   As this committee is an independent entity, please do not contact the AOBA office.

2009 AOBA Student Design Competition

Now in its 7th year, the AOBA Student Competition is in full swing. Over 200 schools in North America have been contacted regarding the SDC, and the response from the instructors indicates this year will be the biggest participation of the 7 years of the competition. The mission of the competition is being realized, with alpaca fiber being incorporated into the curriculum of several design schools and colleges this fall!

The Mission Statement for the AOBA Student Design Competition is:  To expose college-level art, fashion and textile design students and professors to the wonders of designing with alpaca fiber. By promoting the competition, we are ensuring the next generation of designers will be entering the workforce with a positive awareness of this amazing luxury fiber that can be utilized throughout their professional lives.  This is exactly what is happening, as we know several of our former student participants are now incorporating alpaca into their further education opportunities and careers in fashion and textiles.

Students from college level design schools across North America are being given a wide variety of alpaca yarn, roving and fabric donated from North American alpaca farms to design fashion and textile concept boards for their entries into the competition this fall semester.   The top four winning entries in each category will be awarded recognition in the form of plaques along with scholarships at the AOBA Winter Conference.

There are several ways to be a sponsor for the Student Design Competition:

  • Individual student sponsorships, where sponsors are matched up with nearby participating schools. $100 will sponsor a student entry. We anticipate over 100 student entries this year, the largest number ever for the competition!
  • Operational and scholarship donations, which fund the awards and scholarship funding for this year and the future. Various levels of monetary donations are available, and any amount is very much appreciated!
  • 100% alpaca yarn and roving in natural colors, which are sent to the participating school instructors for use in designing entries. Any amount helps!

All sponsors and donations will be recognized at www.alpacafashion.com , the home site for the competition.

Materials and monetary donations are needed now to fulfill the school requests by the November 15, 2009 entry deadline and to fund the entry sponsorships, scholarship and awards parts of the competition.

If your farm, business, and/or affiliate would like to become an SDC sponsor, please fill out the sponsor form available at www.alpacafashion.com/forms.asp  and send it with payment to AOBA. To donate yarn, roving and/or fabric, use the materials donation form and follow the instructions for shipping.

For more information, and to donate yarn, roving and/or fabric, contact Ruth Fuqua, AOBA Student Design Competition Coordinator, Hickory Bluff Farms, Mt Juliet, TN

at 615-444-4765 or hickorybluffalpacas@comcast.net

AOBA ANNUAL MARKETING SURVEY – 2009

For Immediate Release – July 23, 2009

If you haven’t completed AOBA’s Annual Marketing Survey you still have one week to do so.  This survey is undertaken each year about this time to help the committee be as effective as possible in developing programs and services to support you.  To do this we would like to gain a better understanding of your needs and experiences.  Since this is an annual survey designed to track changes and trends in the industry, some of the questions have been repeated from previous surveys so that we can compare the aggregate responses of our members from year to year and monitor changes.

Please complete the following survey by next Friday - July 31, 2009

No matter how new you are to our industry, your feedback is critical.  Survey results will be used for future planning.  For technical assistance or questions about the survey, please contact Barb Nuessle, Marketing Committee member, by email:  bnuessle@aol.com or phone:  (609) 884-0563.

Organizers also believe start-up innovation is suffering. Saddled with debt, and lacking funds to get off the ground, many would-be young entrepreneurs are opting to place their business ideas on hold.

Cheryl Friedman, 21, a recent graduate from the University of Illinois in Chicago, said she wants to start a non-profit alpaca farm retreat for battered women who have gone through the shelter system, but still need more time to recover. Retreat residents would help produce income for the farm by creating yarn out of alpaca wool.
