SAJAMA, Bolivia — Bolivia’s alpaca farmers live far, far away from the world’s financial capitals, but they have still felt the bite of the economic crisis, which has cut demand for the lustrous textile used in pricey clothes from Milan to Melbourne.

It was expected all summer long, and now it’s official. Rockingham County is back in the cross hairs of a public health threat from Eastern Equine Encephalitis, state health officials said.

Yesterday, the public health department announced the state’s first 2009 confirmed case of EEE. A baby alpaca tested positive for the disease, according to Dr. Sherry Burrer of the health department. The alpaca died Aug. 10 in Rockingham County, Burrer said.
